Can I visit the coliving space upfront?

Whenever a room becomes available we organize viewing moments. If you can’t be physically present we do offer the option for virtual tours for some properties or you will be able to consult video footage.

Alternative living models like coliving and cohousing both promote social interaction and support, benefiting physical and mental health. However, coliving stands out with its flexible living arrangements, shorter stay options, and a greater focus on shared spaces. In coliving, you still have the privacy of your own room, but also access to a wide range of communal areas such as lounges, workspaces, kitchens, and more, creating a vibrant, community-driven atmosphere.

In contrast, cohousing typically involves private homes with shared communal areas, focusing on long-term living and fostering closer, more consistent relationships between neighbors. While cohousing is ideal for those seeking stability and deeper connections over time, coliving offers a more dynamic, flexible lifestyle, especially appealing to younger professionals or digital nomads looking for convenience and a more transient living experience.

The rooms vary greatly in size. Our smallest room is 14 m² and our largest room is 38 m². You can find the surface of each room in the room listings.

The number of housemates varies from house to house and ranges from 4 to 12.

Yes. You can use the address of the house you are staying in.

Yes, for sure! Each house has a laundry room with washer and dryer.

Coliving is the housing form of the future. Living at House of co is about social interaction with like-minded people. The residents share not only the living space but also their vision of life.

All our houses are located less than 15 minutes from the city center by public transport. Also, all our houses have supermarkets, butchers, bakeries, … within walking distance.

The main idea of coliving is that it is community-oriented. Therefore, all the shared spaces are free to use by our residents as they please. There are no restrictions in place.

Each contract starts at the first of a new month and ends on the last day of it. Minimum contract is six months. No maximum.

In all of our homes, the living room, kitchen, dining room and outdoor area are shared. Some houses have a private bathroom per room in other houses the bathroom is also shared.

The residents of House of co are usually between 25 and 40 years old, come from all corners of the world and are mostly professionally active.

What additional services are available?

Averechts architects is an architecture studio founded by Bart Favoreel and Eilien Neumann. The team creates designs that originate from collages. The collage is a portrait that tells a story about the design and the place. This narrative is about the context, the intervention and a layering of different styles and materials borrowed from eras in architecture and art history. All this together formed into a compositional and sensory whole. As a team, we strive for the one right solution for the program and the location, free from any prejudice or laziness. We introduce substantiated insights and search for new as well as proven typologies.
Everything at the service of the final project as the final destination.

CURANT is the abbreviation of ‘Cohousing and case management for Unaccompanied young adult Refugees in ANTwerp’.

With this project, the city and OCMW Antwerp allow young people to co-house for at least a year under a roof with a newcomer – a recognized refugee or subsidiary protected young person who is in Belgium without parents between the ages of 17 and 21. By living together with a peer – buddy – and intensive guidance, they want to improve the integration of young newcomers.

The project will run until October 31, 2019. A total of at least 75 and a maximum of 135 young newcomers and volunteers will share an apartment or house over a period of three years.

The innovative project is made possible thanks to resources from the Urban Innovative Actions (UIA) fund, an initiative of the European Commission. The European Commission chose the project from 378 proposals from different European cities.

In their communication they refer to ‘cohousing’ CURANT. Legally, ‘together houses’ is a more correct term. But because this concept is less common in Belgium, they chose to alternately speak of ‘co-housing’, ‘sharing an apartment or house’, ‘living together’, ‘living under one roof’…

Curant refers young people who they believe fit into a House or co-environment to us. They also guide the young people further once they live with us.

CBAW Refugee Operations guides 40 unaccompanied minor refugees between the ages of 17 and 25 who are going to live independently.

How does the guidance work?

During an introduction and intake interview with the young person, we examine whether our offer offers a suitable answer to the needs of the young person and his/her context. If a young person has residence documents, the focus of the guidance is on working on skills, social network, emotional well-being, among other things, which enable the young person to take control of his life himself or with the help of his network. If a young person does not have residence documents, we will initially support the young person in finding prospects for the future.

Joba refers young people who they believe fit into a House of co environment to Houise of co. They keep on guiding the young people once they live in one of our projects.

House of co Living guide

House of co would like you to have a pleasant stay on every single moment in each of his projects. We are convinced that sharing a place with people from all over the world needs an engagement from who is willing to join. Let’s make it a great experience for every tenant by following this House of co agreement. We only want you to be a member of the community when you’re willing to follow what we suggest.

In case you do not agree or are not able to commit, we will sanctionate and if necessary end  the rental agreement. You do agree by your signature at the end of this document.

General

We do provide you two keys at the beginning of your stay. These are personal. It is not allowed to pass them on, to multiply or to fit another cylinder in your room door.

As soon as you are passing the front door you enter a smoke and drugs free area. We want you to respect this at any time to make everyone feel as comfortable as possible.

Technical installations can only be changed by the House of co staff.

Please attach posters and other decorations in such a way that they do not damage the walls or doors. We can help you with some good tips if you do appreciate it.

You can have a guest overnight two times a week. Please inform your house mates in advance.

Even though we love animals, we ask you not to keep any pets.

Your Room

Please do not paint or wallpaper your room without the landlord’s express permission.

The use of a mattress protector is obligatory. This is provided by the landlord.

During your stay you are responsible for the regular cleaning of your room.

You are not allowed to use separate heating devices in your room or in the common rooms.

To prevent clogging, we ask you not  to pour dirty water, fats and food remains into your washbasin. Dirty water must be poured into the toilet or the drainpipe, (cooled) oils must be deposited in a suitable bottle and food remains must be left in the correct waste bag. The back of the waste calendar contains a detailed overview. You can find it over here.

Common areas

Please treat these areas with respect and keep them clean. Personal belongings may not be left behind in the common rooms.

Do sort household refuse. To do this, you use the rubbish bags provided, which are required by the city of Antwerp. Glass should be taken to the glass container. You are to take out the waste on the set dates.

Please do not place garbage, refuse bags, furniture, personal effects, etc. in the hallways

We will charge all damage to the common parts to the responsible person(s), or if he/they cannot be found, to all residents or users. Illegal dumping will also be charged.

The furniture provided in communal areas may not be moved. Indoor furniture must remain inside at all times, outdoor furniture must remain outside at all times.

As a tenant you do not make any changes or additions to the living space. It is not allowed to place one’s own furniture in common areas.

To prevent clogging dirty water is to be poured into the toilet or the drain, (cooled) oils are to be disposed of in a suitable bottle and food remains are to be left in the appropriate waste bag. The back of the waste calendar contains a detailed overview.

You are required to remove food waste and leave the kitchen clean after use. You are to clean the table, hotplates, oven, microwave, sink and floor. Every day you do the dishes, clean up and put away everything.

Please keep the refrigerator clean and defrost the freezer regularly. If you are absent for at least one week, you are to take your food out of the fridge. At the end of the academic year, the fridges and freezers are defrosted by us. You will be informed personally in time. You will also be asked to remove your personal food from the refrigerator and freezer.

You are not to take food from anyone else.

We ask you to remove expired food from the refrigirator.

Plates, cutlery, glasses and all kitchen utensils must be completely dry before placing them in the cupboard.

Sanitary

Out of respect for your fellow residents and to prevent pipes from blocking, please leave the sanitary facilities clean and the floor dry.

You are to rinse the shower after use, remove the hair from the grate and take your shower equipment back to your room.

After each use, flush the toilet and, if necessary, clean it with the toilet brush. You flush the toilet paper with the toilet.

Used toilet rolls, sanitary towels and similar items are to be left in the waste bin.

For hygienic reasons it is not allowed to leave toiletries on the sink. Toiletries must always be stored in the bathroom cupboards or your room after use.

Living together with others is not always easy or problem-free. Avoid conflicts and ensure that you do not cause any inconvenience. Respect the privacy of others. Keep to the agreements made.

You are required to respect the quiet enjoyment of the other tenants. So keep it quiet in the house, during the day but especially in the evening and at night.

Between 22:00 pm and 07:00 am, we kindly ask you not to cause unnecessary noise that endangers the peace and quiet of fellow residents or neighbors.

If you want to organize an activity in your room or in the communal areas, you always need the prior consent of the House of co staff.

Your own safety and the safety of others

Please keep the front door and the doors to the upper floor closed at all times.

Keep the windows on the ground floor closed during your absence.

To prevent strangers from slipping in, you are to open the door only when your visitors ring it.

Always keep the corridors clear as an escape route in case of fire.

Kindly request not to walk on the flat roofs, to move about via the gutters, to pass from one terrace to another, etc.

Sustainable energy consumption

Please ventilate your room when you are present. Close your window when you leave your room, especially if it is freezing or raining.

Avoid wasting electricity and heat. Please do not hang anything on the heater to dry.

Keep your windows closed when the heating is on.

Never set the thermostat above 22° C. Additional costs on energy bills will be recovered from the tenants.

Please switch off electrical appliances completely in good time. Even when on standby, appliances often still use energy. Turn off cookers and ovens completely after use.
